2007 Altima Overview Nissan has re-invented the Altima for the second time in its four generations. The Nissan Altima has been totally redesigned for 2007.It offers more performance, comfort, safety, economy, and better looks than last year’s model. It looks more like the Maxima now. It’s a couple of inches shorter on the outside, but has more room on the inside, including a spacious trunk.Fold-down rear seats allow the trunk to expand into the cabin for carrying big long things. The object of the redesign was to bring the feel and power of a luxury car to this everyman’s midsize sedan, and Nissan has succeeded, at least with the Altima model that has the V6 engine and all the options, including plush leather. There are still models with a four-cylinder engine, which offer good power and get 26 city and 34 highway miles per gallon. The 3.5-liter V6 is a new engine generation. It makes 270 horsepower, more than what’s available in other midsize cars (excluding turbocharged or expensive sports sedans), along with 258 pound-feet of torque. The price for that power: The V6 requires premium fuel and gets 22/28 mpg.Another thing that makes the Altima stand out is its new optional CVT, or continuously variable transmission. It’s the only automatic transmission available in this car, and it’s a winner with its manual mode, which allows six speeds or ranges.A CVT improves gas mileage because there’s less internal friction. The handling is true, and the suspension is quite firm without ever being harsh. It inspires confidence. It’s a match for rough pavement and is steady and predictable in extreme situations. The Altima also comes loaded with safety features. An intelligent key comes standard in the Altima. This system enables the car to be started with the keys in your purse or pocket. This might be convenient for some, but it leads to new problems, having to do with the memory of the human brain and confusion of the car’s electronic brain.Hide Full Review

2007 Nissan Altima Details Interior Seat cushions in the “high-hospitality” interior have been lengthened and offer good thigh support. Seatbacks are taller, but back support isn’t quite up to par. Especially with leather upholstery, you may sometimes feel as if you’re about to slide downward. Front occupants can stretch out comfortably. Abundant glass translates to super visibility and a low cowl permits expansive views ahead. Gauges are basic, but easy to read. Doubled in volume, the glovebox is now deemed “jumbo-size,” because no part of the air conditioner is behind it. A new dual-pivot brake pedal promises normal “feel” at both low and high speeds. Exterior Built on an all-new “D” platform, the Altima rides a wheelbase that has shrunk by nearly an inch. Overall length is 2.5 inches shorter than the 2002 through 2006 models, and windshield pillars have moved forward. In its 2007 form the sedan’s “stance is still aggressive,” according to Nissan, but in a slightly smaller size. In consideration of the car’s many new features a shorter wheelbase was needed to keep weight down, but Nissan claims the Altima offers “the same room inside.” Wheel arches are considerably more pronounced. Taillamps were reworked, but have kept the basic look of the prior generation. Body rigidity has improved, too.

Nissan’s best seller, the Altima, received a major redesign in 2007, it’s first since 2002. The four-door sedan now rests on the all-new “D” platform, the engine has been lowered by 30 mm, the front suspension has been redesigned, all of which has improved the already credible ride. The wheelbase is nearly an inch shorter, but due to interior changes that included moving the cowl and rear glass, the size of the interior and trunk remain largely unchanged. The Altima continues to offer two engines: the base and S trims have a 2.5L four-cylinder with 175 hp, while the SE and SL models sport a 3.5L V6 that puts out 270 hp (vs. 250 hp for 2006). Both engines have a drive-by-wire throttle, and Nissan’s Xtronic CVT with manual mode is available as an option on all but the base trim, which instead is only available with a 6-speed. New standard equipment for 2007 includes front, side seat-mounted, and side curtain air bags, push-button ignition with Intelligent Key, disc brakes all around, and a one-touch driver’s window. The quality of materials has been refined, and the exterior has been freshened as well. Touch-screen navigation, Bluetooth, a rearview monitor, a Bose audio system, HID headlights, and dual-zone automatic temperature control are all now optional equipment. The hybrid Altima, a first for Nissan, became available in the winter of 2007.

When Nissan redesigned its midsize sedan for 2002, it turned out as big as the “flagship” Maxima. Because that Altima has sold strongly, Nissan kept the 2007 redesign evolutionary, concentrating on improvements. Lower engine mounting, for instance, aims to cut “torque steer” to near-zero. Either a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) may be installed with the four-cylinder or V6 engine. This CVT, Altima’s first, provides a kickdown comparable to regular automatics. Shift modes provide normal, economy and sport operation, with no strange “rubber band” sensation. A gasoline/electric hybrid sedan will arrive soon, followed by an Altima Coupe.
